The Principles Behind Sound Healing
Every object, including the human body, has a natural frequency of vibration known as resonance. Sound healing instruments emit vibrations that can interact with the body’s resonance. When sound waves reach our ears, they transform into electrical signals that move up through the auditory nerve to the auditory cortex, the part of the brain that processes sound. Once sound waves reach our brains, they trigger responses in our bodies. This process alters our emotions, releases hormones and chemicals that impact both our bodies and moods, and activates certain impulses (e.g., singing and dancing).
In neurological studies, listening to music has been proven to make us more productive and creative; it can alleviate stress and, depending on the type of music, enhance our mood.
This is because listening to music floods our brains with dopamine – the happy chemical. It also releases oxytocin, a natural painkiller and hormone that fosters bonding and trust – most commonly observed in mothers during childbirth.
From a spiritual viewpoint, everything in the universe, including our bodies, is in a state of vibration. Sound healing is seen as a way to tune into the fundamental frequencies of the universe, promoting unity, balance, and healing by aligning individual vibrations with the universal vibrations.
